Writing an invitation after a death in the family is hard. The wording needs to be calm, clear and respectful, and it usually has to be done quickly. This page gives you simple text you can adapt for a shradhanjali sabha (condolence meeting), a shraddha, a barkhi (first death anniversary) or a memorial service.
If you want to share it as a quiet, simple card, you can use a shraddha and memorial card.
What to include
- The name of the person who has passed away, with स्व. (late) before it
- Optionally, their age and the date they passed away
- The type of gathering: shradhanjali sabha, shraddha, barkhi or prayer meeting
- Date, time and venue
- The family members inviting, often “शोकसन्तप्त परिवार” (the grieving family)
Keep colours and decoration minimal. White, grey or a soft cream background with a lamp, lotus or photo is enough.

Notes on tone

- If you do not want replies, you can simply leave out any RSVP line.
Condolence meeting notice for an office or organisation
When a colleague or a member of an organisation passes away, offices often hold a short condolence meeting. The notice is brief:
शोक सभा सम्बन्धी सूचना
यस संस्थाका सदस्य स्व. ...........................ज्यूको निधनप्रति गहिरो दुःख व्यक्त गर्दै आज दिउँसो ३ बजे सभाहलमा शोक सभा आयोजना गरिएको छ। सम्पूर्ण कर्मचारीहरूलाई उपस्थितिका लागि अनुरोध छ।
A condolence meeting for the late ................. will be held today at 3 PM in the meeting hall. All staff are requested to attend.
Wording for the 13th day (तेह्रौं दिन) and other rites
Some families hold a gathering on the thirteenth day, at the end of the mourning period, or at a monthly or six-monthly shraddha. The same format works; just name the rite:
स्व. ...........................ज्यूको तेह्रौं दिनको कार्यक्रममा उपस्थित भइदिनुहुन अनुरोध गर्दछौं।
Newar, Buddhist, Christian and Muslim families have their own practices and terms. Ask a family elder or religious leader which words are right for your tradition.
A short line to add a photo
Many families add a photo with a line beneath it such as “सदैव हाम्रो सम्झनामा” (always in our memory) or “Forever in our hearts”. Choose a photo in which the person looks as family remembers them.
Make the card online
The shraddha and memorial templates use quiet colours and serif lettering. Type the name, the dates and the venue, add a photo and share one link with family near and far.
