What goes on a bratabandha invitation card?

A bratabandha card opens with a blessing such as ॥ श्री गणेशाय नमः ॥, names the parents as hosts and the boy as चि. (chiranjivi) with his full name. It gives the Bikram Sambat date with the weekday and tithi, the saait fixed by the family priest, and the venue for the ceremony and the bhoj.

Many families add a line for the chudakarma (head shaving) in the morning and the feast later in the day, so guests know when to arrive for each. Newar families hold Kayta Puja instead, and the card names it that way.

Updated 25 September 2026

Keep the order of the day clear

  • Morning: chudakarma and the janai rites, usually at home or a temple.
  • Midday: the guru mantra and bhiksha, when relatives give the boy alms.
  • Afternoon or evening: the bhoj, which most guests attend.
  • Put each on its own line or page with its own time, so nobody arrives for the wrong part.

Dates the family priest set

Bratabandha dates follow the priest’s calculation, so the card leads with the Bikram Sambat date in Devanagari and the tithi, with the English date beneath it for relatives abroad. Both come from one date field and cannot disagree.

FAQ

Bratabandha cards: common questions

Who is named as the host on a bratabandha card?
The boy’s parents host, so their names sit above his, often with the grandfather’s name to place the family line. The boy is named with चि. before his name. Some cards also name the maternal uncle, who has a role in the ceremony.
At what age is bratabandha done?
Bratabandha is usually done between about five and sixteen years of age, often in an odd-numbered year, with the exact date fixed by the family priest. The card does not need to state the boy’s age.
What is the Newar version of bratabandha called?
In Newar families the coming-of-age rite for boys is Kayta Puja, in which the boy receives a loincloth (kayta). Bihekocard has Kayta Puja designs with tiki jhya window art, and the wording can be written in Nepal Bhasa.
