RSVP appears on almost every wedding card, including more and more bihe ko card designs in Nepal, yet many guests are not sure what it asks them to do. The short answer: it is a request to tell the host whether you are coming.
RSVP full form
RSVP stands for the French phrase répondez s’il vous plaît, which means “please reply”. It came into English through formal European invitations and is now used worldwide.
RSVP meaning in Nepali
In Nepali, RSVP simply means “कृपया जवाफ दिनुहोला” or “आउने/नआउने जानकारी दिनुहोला”. It asks you to let the family know whether you will attend, ideally by a certain date.
In Hindi it is often explained as “कृपया उत्तर दें”.
What RSVP means on a wedding card
On a wedding card, RSVP asks you to confirm:
- Whether you will come
- How many people from your family will come
- Sometimes, which events you will attend: mehendi, the wedding, the reception
The family uses these numbers to book food, seating and transport. At a Nepali wedding, where the bhoj is often the biggest cost, a rough count makes a real difference.
RSVP lines you will see on cards
- RSVP: Ram Sharma, 98XXXXXXXX
- Kindly RSVP by 15 February
- RSVP regrets only (reply only if you cannot come)
- कृपया आउने जानकारी फागुन १ गतेभित्र दिनुहोला।
How to reply to an RSVP as a guest
- Reply by the date given, or within a week if there is none.
- Say clearly yes or no, and how many people.
- Only bring the people named on the invitation.
- If your plans change, tell the family as early as you can.
Sample replies
नमस्ते! निम्तोका लागि धन्यवाद। हामी ३ जना बिहे र रिसेप्सन दुवैमा आउँछौं।
Thank you for the lovely invitation. Sadly we will be abroad that week, but we send our best wishes to the couple.
Is RSVP common on a bihe ko card in Nepal?
Traditionally, a printed bihe ko card did not ask for a reply. Families invited widely and cooked for everyone. That is changing, especially in cities and for hotel and party palace receptions where food is charged per plate. Many couples now add an RSVP line or, more often, use a digital card where guests reply with one tap.
RSVP for each event of a Nepali wedding
A Nepali wedding is often several events: mehendi, the wedding day with janti, and a reception. A single RSVP line is confusing when guests are invited to only some of them. Two simple options:
- Print a separate reply line for each event: “Please let us know which events you will attend: Mehendi, Wedding, Reception.”
- Use a card where guests tick the events they are coming to, so the family gets a count for each one.
Janti numbers matter most for the groom’s side, since transport and seating are booked in advance. Ask janti members to confirm separately.
RSVP etiquette for hosts
- Give a date about two weeks before the wedding, so caterers get a final number in time.
- Give one clear way to reply: a phone number, or a button on the card.
- Say who is invited: “You and your family”, “You and a guest” or just the name.
- Send a gentle reminder to anyone who has not replied a few days before the RSVP date.

Other French words on wedding cards
- R.S.V.P. and RSVP mean the same thing; both are correct.
- “Regrets only” means reply only if you are not coming.
- “Plus one” means you may bring one guest.
On a Nepali card, a line in Nepali is often clearer than any abbreviation: “कृपया आउने/नआउने जानकारी फागुन १ गतेभित्र दिनुहोला।”
Collecting RSVPs without chasing people
Phone calls and chat replies are hard to count. A digital wedding invitation with RSVP puts a reply button on the card itself. Guests tap yes or no and say how many are coming, and the host sees a live list on a dashboard.
You can build your bihe ko card this way from any of the wedding card templates, or start in Nepali on the बिहेको कार्ड page. The same link goes out on WhatsApp and Viber, and the RSVPs come back to one place.
