What goes on a chhewar or mundan invitation card?
A chhewar card invites guests to a boy’s first ritual haircut. It opens with a blessing, names the parents as hosts and the child as चि. with his full name, and gives the Bikram Sambat date, the saait, the venue and the time of the feast.
In India the same ceremony is called mundan or chudakarma, and many families send the card in Hindi. Where the chhewar is held together with a bratabandha, one card can list both ceremonies with their own times.

Who does what
- In many Nepali families the maternal uncle, the mama, makes the first cut, so the card may name him with respect.
- Many families hold chhewar in an odd year of the child’s age, such as three, five or seven, on a date the priest sets.
- Mundan in India is often held in the first or third year, sometimes at a temple.
